I was at Funan to make some purchases and thought I should check out the food court on the ground floor. It was pretty crowded with about 6 stalls only. The wanton looked very endearing but I settled for my all time crave of kuay chap instead.

For $3.50, I got a generous bowl of pork intestines w bean curd, half an egg, pig skin etc. What I really like was the nice spice aroma from the sauce. It's unlike many other kuay chap that I've tried which are over dozed with salt and soy sauce that made me extremely thirsty after meal.

The kuay was a little overcooked and chilli was classic from the factory. Can't go wrong with factory chilli sauce.

Good comfort food at great price!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Lunch@Bali Thai

My most frequent Thai restaurant has to be Thai Express, given it's availability in most major shopping mall. At Lot One, Bali Thai happens to be the only choice and having gotten quite piss off with the terrible service and average tasting food at ThaiExpress, I decided to try out Bali Thai.

• Green Curry Prawn w Prata $9.90

Surprise, I would say. The savoury Green Curry is fragrant filled and rich in coconut. Not too salty not too sweet, unlike most I've tried that's excess in chilli padi, salt or sugar. Only complaint would be the portioning which is about three quarter of ThaiExpress for similar price. The succulent prawns are very crunchy and the Thai eggplant actually surprised me. Most local Thai restaurants don't use this difficult to get and expensive eggplants.

I chose the red Tom Yum instead of the usual clear Tom Yum I settle for. Due to the prawn stock, the tinch of 'fishy' smell might turn some away but I like the lingering after taste that stayed on at the back of my throat. A generous serving of 6 tasty prawns wins me over. The Chinese glass noodle (冬粉)was over cooked. Thai glass noodle would be a better choice.

• Tom Yum Prawn Glass Noodle $9.60

Finally, I've got a plate of tasty non-spicy stir fried kang kong from somewhere. Most that i've tried are either too bland or ain't even edible. The wok hei to get this desired vegetable dish is not easy and I've to give the chef a big thumbs up.

• Kang Kong Garlic $6.20

Overall service is good and the staff can be friendly during non peak hours.

Food: 3.5/5
Service: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3/5
Value: 3/5

Dinner at Tonkichi

Once again I felt very cheated by a Singapore service provider! No doubt I have to say the food at Tonkichi never fails to please my fussy palate, their membership scheme n service will not receive anything more than a "must close one eye" rating from me.

Feels extremely cheated by their renewal scheme which is pay $30 get 2 pcs of $20 vouchers. Pamphlets says that for existing members "vouchers can be used at the same time" but for new members "vouchers can be used at the same time (at 2nd time visit)". N I specifically asked the waitress whether old n new vouchers can be used together... N she said yes! Ends up I can't used them at the cashier... After much reasoning, they just kept insisting that they highlighted to be that "new vouchers only next visit then can use"!!! Sigh... Knowing that it's pointless talking to them, I left with a happy stomach but upset heart.

So, most importantly... Am I going back to Tonkichi... Of course! I still got $40 vouchers haven't use leh. Lolx... Then won't visit them again for rest of the year bah. So sad... Saw their range of Hokkaido Ramen
by an apparent famous Aoba(青叶) Ramen from Japan.

I ordered a Shoyu Ramen which took the calm chef almost 6 mins to cook!! The presentation is typical ramen style. The bowl of noodles comes with half an egg and tiny piece of char shyu. I am pleased that the ramen noodles is very springy and texture filled. It's one of the thickest ramen I've ever cone across.

I like the egg for it's soft core but felt that it's one of the smallest eggs I've ever had! Likewise for the char shyu, tasty n good selection of pork. It's not very dry like some ramen, nor does my mouth felt lubricated after taking a bite. I particularly like the charred smell it emits which makes the pork very flavorful.

Next is the most important part of any ramen I eat. The soup base. First sip of it and I can distinctively taste a broth of chicken and pork which has been cooked for a few hours. But subsequent spoons of soup made me felt like not drinking it any further because it's very salty! I believe the saltiness comes from the ladle of shoyu the chef added. I would certainly asked for lesser salty in future.

I tried taking a picture of their interior n nice menu but the staff gave me a "urrrhhhh you cannot take photos". Turn-off.

At a price tag of $7.50, this ramen is worth a try. But I'll still adore my ramen from Ken's.

Prelude to 2010 New Year Resolution

As we approach the ticking last few seconds of the 2009 year, many people would be pulling out pieces of paper, opening their dust covered diaries or logging into the blog that they have not visited for the last 10 months to pen down their Resolutions for the 2010 year. Vividly I remember writing New Year Resolution for the year of 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2006.

I dare to say that I did not manage to resolve any of my resolutions for any of these 4 years. In fact, it’s only this month (Dec 2009) that I managed to achieve one of my 2006’s resolution... which is to run my first Full Marathon. Coaches, mentors, teachers, friends, relatives will always ask during the New Year season, “What do you want to achieve in this new year?”, “What’s your goal for the next 12 months?”, “Have you achieved your goals for the last year?”

Sometime back, I concluded that it’s too difficult to achieve and attain the goals set and resolutions are basically existing to ‘motivate’ you but doesn’t help you in reaching the destination desired. And of course, with that attitude, I stopped making any more resolutions and decided that it’s too much for me to handle the fact that I’m always an under-achiever and am lousy at reaching my goals! And at every New Year count down party, when asked of my resolutions, I would simply answer “What for? 99% of people do not stick to their resolutions and I’m one of them! WIthout resolutions, I have been surviving for the last year of my life at my work and my family.”

Ahah... The key word in my statement is surviving. Do I want to barely survive and hang around and be satisfied with the status quo or do I want to excel in what I do and make a difference in my life, or even the lives of a million other people? Without pondering much into these questions 4 months back when I came across an online advertisement for participation in Standard Chartered Marathon 2009, I swiftly signed up and paid $57.25 (including a 15% discount as Standard Chartered Credit Card Member). I have to say that was a very very bold move and I did freeze in my seat thinking whether I would be throwing the $57.25 away. I hate to waste resources, especially money. Not wanting the money to go to waste, I started my research on how to go about training for marathon on the internet... googling through all possible sports websites, running websites and marathon specific websites, I downloaded several different training strategies and program and tried putting together a decent training program that I hoped I could adhere to.

I also started sending messages to my friends from high school, army, universities and anyone whom I know is a good runner and have completed long distance running before, soliciting for buddies to train for the race together. After much searching around, I found a friend K who signed up immediately after I encouraged him to. He has never ran a marathon before and we used to cycle during the wee hours or really early in the morning like 4am! A close friend LP who have completed the marathon in 2008 was extremely reluctant to sign up for the 2009 marathon. That scared me a bit as I thought to myself whether the full marathon could be a far fetch for me. Since I haven’t been running regularly and routinely since year 2000 and I’m not exactly the tone and fit type. I’m FAT and weighty. I have bulging tummy, flabby arms and thighs and even man’s breasts! My close girlfriends would make fun of me that I have bigger cup size than them!

Not giving up on running the SC Marathon 2009, I furthered my research on how I can run effectively and efficiently to help me achieve my goal. Fortunately, I found Racers’ Toolbox and worked with Scott Larsen in helping me plan for my training. Before the planning actually took place, I had to take a physical fitness test comprising Fuel Efficiency and Lactate tests. Basically, I had to run on a thread mill with gadgets hanging over my head, connected to a sophisticated computer system which would then analyze my body and conclude on my Heart Rate zones required for training to achieve different objectives like burning fat, increase strength, improve lactate threshold etc.

My fat burning zone was 111 to 121 heart beats per minute(bmp). I was told to run at that heart rate but I had to literally brisk walk for about 3 weeks as when I started to pick up pace by even a slight bit, my heart rate would cross 140 bmp. And at 140, according to my graphs and tests results, I won’t be burning any fat at all, but I would be burning carbohydrates which isn’t the ideal case. It took me a while and much reading to know the difference between burning fat and burning carbo. After 3 weeks of brisk walking, I actually lost 2kg. After 3 months of training, I lost a total of 4.5kg.

I was extremely shocked by the results. There was no super difficult or tough physical training that I had to go through like those days in the army. Each running session was easy to complete and I started feeling very good, both physically and mentally as endorphins are released into my brain. I used to dread running and hated every physically running tests. But now, I’m starting to enjoy it. Finally on 6th December 2009, the big day came. I woke up at 2.30am to take a bus to the starting point of the Marathon. The run started at 5.30am and I completed the run in 5 hours 21 mins 23 secs. I have to admit that the run was not an easy feat and it took a lot of physical endurance and mental encouragement to push on and reach the finishing line. Even though I started running alone (K decided not to run eventually as he didn’t train for it), I met friends along the way who encouraged me and pushed me on to complete the run. Today is the 31st of December and we are less than 24 hours from the countdown for the New Year 2010. I’ve yet to make any resolutions, but I’ll definitely make some before the day ends. And I’m going to achieve them!

Ice Monster 冰馆

* Store Front of Ice Monster. Basement 2 of Plaza Singapura

Had dinner at Ice Monster, basement of Plaza Singapura and tried some of their food. I ordered a set meal which includes the meat dumpling (锅贴), mango dessert, mango meat floss crepe and ice tea. I would say the food is general alright.

* Mango Ice

* Mango and Meat Floss Crepe

The mango dessert is actually very nice except that the ice shavings ain't smooth like those snow ice shavings. They are very generous with their mango servings and I could actually taste the sweetness and freshness of each piece of mango. The mango meat floss crepe came next. The taste combi of mango with meat floss was interesting enough to let me take more bites. But upon savoring the overall taste of the crepe, I find the taste combination rather weird. The mango is cold while the crepe, lettuce and meat floss are room temperature.

* Meat Dumpling a.k.a. Pot Stickers

Next came the meat dumpling which is also very different from the usual 锅贴. It taste and feel more like cantonese style and not the chinese tianjin style as there's actually some 'soup' inside the dumpling. Thus it's wrapped a bit differently in shape compared to the usual ones. Only thing I don't like about it is that the pan fried skin isn't exactly crispy and overall skin texture is soft. Rather disappointed with the non-crispy skin.

* Uber Normal Ice Tea

Lastly is the Ice Tea. Nothing to shout at.. usual Ice Tea!

This whole meal cost $16.50. Set Meals are $2 more expensive for dinner compared to their lunch. I find this a ridiculous idea.

Comfort Lunch Turned Sad

* Fried Fish Ball (3 in a stick) $1.10

I have been craving for the Fish Balls w special sambal chilli sauce from Old Chang Kee for the longest time and I couldn't take it any longer today. Taking a break off my work, I walked over to the nearest OCK at Capitol Centre and bought their classic Fish Balls (3 in a stick) and Spring Roll. As I approached their self-service condiment (note that their only condiment is the chilli sauce!! lolx) counter, I got a hell shock of my life! I stared at the bottle of chilli sauce and it does not resemble the familiar sambal chilli that i always love having. This new replacement taste sweet and not very spicy like the usual dim sum chilli sauce that food court or coffee shop stalls use. I'm utterly disappointed with this change. Though most people would not notice, I'm sure there are customers like me who simply love OCK because of the chilli. Their fish ball hasn't been fantastic since day 1 anyway and it's the special house chilli that makes the experience of eating junk food awesome.

* Spring Roll $1.20

Sigh.. sadly, i gobbled up the fish balls and went on to the spring roll. It's very crispy and larger in size compared to most other fried spring rolls you get in the market. The filling is generous with well peppered turnip. After having the spring roll, I realised that the spiciness that was lingering in my mouth was from the spring roll and not the chilli sauce. I like the pepper flavour. Brings the whole experience of spring roll eating to a different level.

Tonkichi Ramen Set

Had the Miso Ramen Set w Hire katsu n Spinach goma dressing at Tonkichi Shaw House On Christmas Day. So do ask for more.

Breakfast @ Jones

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_AEzFojKax54/SzlZNgmcydI/AAAAAAAAAJY/J3oTm4fVyRI/s320/IMG_0973.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420461715141478866" />

It was a nice Sunday morning at Jones Dempsey. Had their breakfast of Poach Eggs with Toast and added Sauteed Mushrooms to it. I find it a bit expensive as it cost almost $13 for this plate. Though the food looks very comfy and warm, I find the poached eggs extremely tasteless and had to add salt and pepper to make it taste good! Usually, the yolk would have the 'yolk' taste... have no idea how to describe that.. but these 2 egg yolks have ZERO taste! Totally! I got so curious and got the waitress and enquired abt the weird tasteless egg. She disappeared into the kitchen, came back and said that the eggs are New Zealand Ostrich eggs!

Weird Weird. I always though Ostrich eggs are like 10 times the size of normal chicken eggs?!?! I thought they were smoking me... nope.. i think they were smoking me! Nice place to relax your weekend mornings, have a nice cup of coffee and tea and sweets. But for food, nah... dun think they are good at it... oh. did i mention, jones is actually a grocery store.

Favourite Apple Pie

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_AEzFojKax54/SzlYM2ZCi-I/AAAAAAAAAJQ/6VnoNPtrDws/s320/IMG_0945.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420460604299316194" />
It's been such a long time since i are a hot nice apple pie from mcdonald's! simply love the sweetness and crunchiness of this awesome dessert.

Rasberry Twister

Since young, I've always enjoyed every McDonald's Vanilla Cone. There has been a revamp in the basement food scene and this is one of the changes. It seems like Thai Express is doing up a new concept for the sake of doing it! I have always been a fan of Thai Express because of their generous portion of decent localised Thai food. A few favourites being Stir Phat Pak Bung Fai Daeng (Stir Fried Kang Kong), Woon Sen Kaeng Chued Kai Jiew (Glass noodles in clear chicken broth with sliced chicken) and Avocado Milk Shake.

Kaffir & Lime seems like taking 80% of the current Thai Express Menu, and adding a new selection of lime signature dishes. I didn't try their lime signature dishes as they didn't even look appealing in their descriptions. I ordered some usuals like Tom Yum Prawn Soup, Thick Green Curry Laksa, Stir Fried Kang Kong and Avocado Milk Shake.

Look at the pathetic serving of the Tom Yum Soup! The price isn't much different from ThaiExpress but their size is significantly smaller!! I felt so cheated...

Overall, the taste is still very similar to ThaiExpress... Only unhappy thing is smaller portion size... Oh. The avocado milk shake was rather tasteless. Seemed like they used only one-eighth of a fruit...

Simply.... DISAPPOINTMENT.

- Jim

Breakfast @ Casa Verde

Are you bored with the usual Roti Pratas in the morning? or Kaya Toasts with Kopi-kao? I enjoyed the breakfast very much.

If you are a dog lover, you can bring your dog to this place. They even have drinking dishes for dogs. But I have a recent discovery that their ramen are actually quite tasty and goes well with the tonkatsu. They have set promotions whereby you order a ramen, a tonkatsu and a side dish. I order the Charsyu Miso Ramen, Rosu Tonkatsu & Boiled Spinach set. On top of that, the enticing Kimuchi Tofu appetiser is a must order!

The ramen soup base is of the right texture and the Q-ness of the noodle makes the bowl of soup noodle simply fantastic. The menma (bamboo shoots) is my favourite and Tonkichi never fails to give more than enough. My all-time-love, rosu tonkatsu with miso sauce is wonderful. yummmy... For those who likes small appetisers, try their Horenso Goma Ae (boiled spinach with sesame sauce) and kimuchi tofu. (a hawker center at Jalan Leban) and decided to pop in to find some food because I see many car turning in and out of their little car park. If you drive, don't worry that you can't get a parking lot because people who comes here for meals don't stay long. Somehow everyone comes and go very fast. As such, most of the stalls here are having good business and fast turnover.

I saw that this Fried Kway Teow stall's business was fantastic and decided to order a plate of 'restricted' food to try. i've been refraining from eating fried kway teow for the longest time because of the pork lard they use. usually, the best fried kway teow has to be of pork lard oil, and this one is of no difference. but it's not very oily. in fact, i find it to be more of sweet than anything else. I waited for about 15 mins for my plate of noodles. The way the boss cook this noodle reminded me of the old grandpa who perpetually have a 30mins queue at his fried kway teow stall at Commonwealth Ave Food Centre (more know to be Margaret Drive Hawker Centre). Each plate of fried kway teow was cooked individually, thus the longer waiting time.

Each plate has a generous serving of the lap cheong (preserved sausages) and fresh cockles. With the crunchy bean sprout and smooth kway teow, each mouthful of fried kway teow is earth shaking. There isn't a presence of overflooding pork lard like the Margaret Drive's version, and I feel that this is a slightly healthier and better version. I was a little shocked by the price for a small place of noodles. It's $4 and by the looks, it's not worth it. But upon tasting it, it's definitely worth a try, and more comebacks.

Stall Name: Lai Heng Fried Kway Teow
Location: Sembawang Hill Food Centre (along Thomson Road and Jalan Leban)
Taste: 4.5/5
Value: 3/5
Presentation: 2.5/5
Location: 3/5 (simply because parking is easy)

St Ives Blue Clay Firming Mask

Got this very affordable clay mask from Robinson's that day and tried it last night. It's good. It has a minty and cooling effect and really firm up the skin without making the skin dry. The herbal extracts deep cleanse while stimulating collagen production so the skin looks replenished and younger, not dry and dull. Not bad. Worth a try if you are looking for budget yet quality clay mask.

Menscience Daily Shampoo

I have been using Menscience Facial Care products for a while and recently got to try their hair product. As a satisfied customer of Menscience acne care products you see below, i'm rather disappointed with this shampoo. The shampoo's color and texture is very similar to that of the Menscience Daily Face Wash, which surprised me a bit, and even the smell is similar! (there's no smell) Upon application to my hair, i'm quite shocked. The Daily Shampoo seemed to have a hasty drying effect of the hair. It's very uncomfortable using it and i had to wash it off quick and apply my usual hair conditioner to get back the smooth, nice to touch hair! This Daily Shampoo is quite a let down for me, and looks like I've to replace it with other products.

Wanton Mee @ Kai Kee (Dover)

Previously, I went to Sunshine Plaza for the famous Wanton Mee and got really disappointed. The Kai Kee (佳记) Wanton Mee is good. It gives a very simple aroma that you don't get elsewhere because there's no big splash of MSG and artificial flavours. Simple wanton, simple char siew, but great flavour, great taste. They are also generous with the serving of the char siew and all these for $2.50 only.

I tried the nearby zhui gue and dessert which is in the same hawker centre. The zhui gue is very good too as it's made on the spot by this very courteous uncle. It's very smooth and simply melts in the mouth. The chai po they use isn't too salty nor sweet. It's just right and I love it as there's no fried onions in it, which many zhui gue stall adds in nowadays. Dessert wise, nothing great.

Stall Name: Kai Kee Wanton
Location: Blk 33 Dover Road
Taste: 4/5
Value: 4/5
Presentation: 2/5
Location: 4/5 (simply because parking is easy)
Map:

<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=embed&hl=en&geocode=&q=singapore,+33+dover+road&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=42.987658,93.164063&ie=UTF8&z=14&iwloc=addr&ll=1.311207,103.787842" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255); Me this evening and I have to say... it has really been a while since I caught a great show. Initially I thought that I'm in for some romance comedy or something, based on the movie poster, but I was all wrong. This show is great simply because it's extremely meaningful and it taught me all about how a dog can change the lives of an entire family.

Owen and Jennifer as a couple adopted Marley when he was just a puppy. Marley was a difficult dog to raise and through the years, Marley has grown to be part of the family and even the kids have grown to love him. The show was about what matters in life. It's not the job you do, it's not the house you live in, it's not the fancy car you drive, it's not the beautiful designer clothes you wear. It's about how you want to live your life happily and with whom you would like to share your life with. It's about how you should choose the way you want your life to be and not listen to what others tell you.

I've not really wanted to have a dog since young because I always find them to have some smell which I cannot take. And the dogs that I love are all the puppies, cute little ones like chiwawa, new borns and nothing else. But Marley the Labrador retrieval is not only clean and cute, it's also able to know his master's heart very well. That's actually a great reason why I would want to have a dog at home even though a lot of times, I can't stand the smell from the dog. But now that I know that dogs are such great pets and can be a great member of the family, I'm already considering what dog to have when I have a house of my own.
